Local Business Women helping Women in Africa

In January 2007, a group of twenty business women travelled to Nairobi, Kenya at their own expense do community work in the slums of Nairobi. Some of the projects we
worked on included:
- Painting classrooms in the school
- Funding, painting and building a primary classroom at NEGST (Nairobi Evangelical
Graduate School of Theology)
- Planting a garden at NEGST primary school
- Teaching orphans who lived in an orphanage in the slums how to paint paintings.
These paintings were brought back to Canada and auctioned off to raise funds for a
new home for the orphans in the country side away from the slum
- Teaching women how to do quilting and sewing at NEGST and at a women's
cooperative in Nairobi that supports immigrant women or women escaping abusive
relationships
- Hugging and loving AIDS babies in the slums
While we were there, we met so many interesting and hopeful women who worked
together to change their circumstances. On our last day, Esther Wanjohi, of the Evangelical Day Care Centre, came to visit us to show us the jewellery and sandals and purses made by the women in her cooperative. I contacted Esther when I returned to Canada and asked her to send us some samples of her jewellery and I would try to sell it here in Canada for her. To date, many sales have been held in our community, at churches, the school board, events etc. A selection of jewellery and sandals will be available at the meeting on February 27, 2008 at JP Fitzpatrick's – bring your wallets and open your hearts – jewellery has been priced to clear and all proceeds are returned directly to Esther in Nairobi to fund initiatives for women and children whose lives have been impacted by AIDS and monies raised goes to housing, daycare, medicine, food, and emergency shelter. I look forward to meeting everyone, Louise Bérubé
